To all loving and dedicated dads this Father’s Day

We often downplay the importance of fatherhood, regarding dads merely as a free handyman, a very generous bank or a 24/7 taxi driver.

Their sacrifices are often overlooked and unappreciated, taken for granted. But aren’t fathers, same as mothers, loving, dedicated and thoughtful in their own way? Don’t they just want the best for their children?

Security and peace of mind are certainly values dads crave for their children, so why not surprise your dad with a gift that embraces these qualities this Father’s Day?

To all dedicated and loving dads this Father's Day

It’s time to give something back

No doubt that mothers do a wonderful job… they do your washing, prepare delicious dinners and lunches, pick you up every time you fall, stay up and worry when you’re out late and even chauffeur you everywhere. You grow older and years after you leave home, they are still worrying about you, helping around.

Mothers – always try to set an example, giving you direction and always with their arms wide open whenever we decide to return. Isn’t that remarkable?

Who else would give up their time and sleep, their waistline, years of peace and quiet?

Mother’s Day is a good enough reason to say thank you, to show our mothers how much they mean to us and how much we appreciate what they’ve done and continue doing.

It’s time we gave them something back, that peace of mind they crave when growing older and that children look for as roles are reversed and they are now the ones who must care for their mother.

At emCare we offer electronic and mobile care solutions aimed at peace of mind, accident prevention and health monitoring that make independent living safer.

This Mother’s Day join us for an event at our store and you can get a discount on the eCare service as well as get a chance to win an add-on to the service by taking part in a competition. Those who visit our store on May 10 and 11, will also be given a gift.

Fighting the flu

Getting a cold or flu-like symptoms is always dreading and what is winter without a bout of influenza affecting you or your relatives?

January2018_Fighting the flu_symptoms

Over the past weeks we have been inundated with news about the severity of this year’s flu season.

Following are some tips that can help protect you and others:

  • Stay at home if you have flu-like symptoms. Avoid going to work, school and to any crowded places. If you’ve recently had the illness stay away from elderly relatives, patients and children
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or your arm when you cough or sneeze and throw the tissue away immediately
  • Stay hydrated
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water. An alcohol-based hand rub is also good when soap and water are not available
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth because of germ spreading
  • Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated such as door handles
  • Get the vaccine for free from local health centres. You are still in time even though it will take over 2 weeks to become affective
  • Seek help if symptoms persist or get worse

Stay ‘gas safe’ at home

Most households in Malta make use of appliances which work with gas whether it’s a gas oven, range top or BBQ to cook food, a gas heater or fireplace to keep the house warm or a water heater.

Here are some important safety tips to protect yourself and your home.

gas_flame_1

  • Gas appliances should have a clear, steady blue flame unless it is a natural gas fireplace designed to produce yellow flames (small amounts of yellow and orange flames occasionally are normal).
  • Never use a gas oven or range top as a room heater.
  • Keep range and oven burners clean. Never line the oven completely with foil.
  • Turn off gas fireplaces and heaters before going to bed or leaving your house.
  • Periodically check your gas appliance connectors. These can become hazardous due to deterioration, excessive movement, bending or corrosion.
  • Never try to repair or install a gas appliance yourself. Get a professional.
  • Keep the space around furnaces and water heaters clean and clear of build-up, rags, newspapers and other debris.
  • Make sure there is enough ventilation for gas appliances to burn correctly and that no air vents or chimneys are blocked.
  • Never store combustibles such as aerosol cans, paints, household cleaners or similar products near any gas-burning equipment.
  • Stay aware of the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning – headaches, dizziness, nausea, breathlessness, collapse and loss of consciousness.
  • Have at least one working LP Gas detector for each level of your home and install it near your gas appliance.

If you smell gas get out of the building immediately, do not use any light switches, do not smoke or strike matches, do not try to find the source of the leak but call the emergency number 112 once outside as a mobile phone might create a spark.

emCare offers electronic and mobile care solutions which provide families and those living independently peace of mind and safety irrespective of age or telephone service provider.

The LP Gas detector available as an add-on to the emCare hub, is a device which automatically alerts our 24/7 call centre before the gas build-up reaches poisoning levels.

The heat is on!

With temperatures expected to continue to rise over the coming weeks, we can say that the heat is on and it’s going to be a sizzling summer.

hydration_landscape

Summer is the time for BBQ’s, relaxation and outdoor fun however extreme heat can affect our daily activities as well as being a serious risk to health and wellbeing if precautions are not taken. This is even more important when it comes to older people.

So, whether you’re an elderly person, carer or family member, make sure you or your loved ones have a fun and safe summer by following these summer tips:

  • Keep out of the heat by avoiding unnecessary exposure to the sun during hot periods of the day — usually between 11am and 4pm.
  • If, however you love the outdoors, make sure you keep track of time so to avoid staying outdoors for long periods. If you enjoy exercising and long walks, make sure you get these done earlier in the morning or late in the evening when the sun is not at its peak.
  • Drink plenty of water to make up for fluid loss and eat more cold foods. Older people are more susceptible to dehydration than younger people because they lose their ability to conserve water as they age. They also can become less aware of their thirst and have difficulty adjusting to temperature changes.
  • Dress right. For warmer weather try wearing clothes that are made of natural fabrics such as cotton, clothes that are light-coloured and loose-fitting to help feel cooler and comfortable.
  • Sunscreen and hats. Everyone, young and old, should wear sunscreen when outdoors even if you plan on doing an errand using your car. Hats are also a good idea particularly for bald people or people with light-coloured hair.
  • Sunglasses are a good way of lessening damage to the eye leading to vision loss which is common amongst the elderly. Wearing sunglasses can protect your eyes from harmful UV rays.
  • Check with your doctor or pharmacist to make sure your medications won’t be affected by higher temperatures as some medications are less effective if stored at temperatures higher than room temperature.
  • Stay cool by staying in the coolest parts at home and at the workplace. Older people are more disposed to the harmful effects of heat as their bodies do not adjust as well to sudden changes in temperature.
  • Beware of hyperthermia. During summer, be cautious about abnormally high body temperatures. A heat stroke or hyperthermia, can be life-threatening. Here are the signs and symptoms of hyperthermia:
    * body temperature greater than 40°C
    * change in behaviour such as acting confused, agitated or grouchy
    * dry, flushed skin
    * nausea and vomiting
    * headache
    * heavy breathing or a rapid pulse
    * not sweating even if it’s hot
    * fainting
  • Keep in touch with your loved ones regularly.

Follow these tips and have an enjoyable and fun-filled summer irrespective of your age.

emCare offers different electronic and mobile care solutions aimed at peace of mind, accident prevention, health monitoring and maintaining one’s independence. One of the devices is a complete care system which includes a temperature sensor. This automatically alerts you or your next of kin through a mobile device when the room gets too cold or too hot. Why telecare is not just for the elderly

There is this myth that telecare services are for the elderly. The below is a confirmation that this is just a myth and that when reality hits, we all recognise that wanting to feel safe is not symptomatic of old age.

Why does emCare give you peace of mind?

Meet David and his beautiful family of five.

“My wife does an impeccable job with our three children particularly when I am away on business trips. We’ve had the telecare service since our first son was born. Somehow having children makes you want to protect your family even more and with emCare we had that added sense of security. I was out of the country recently on one of my usual business trips and my wife needed assistance with the children at night when one of my daughters got very ill. Imagine having to wake up the other children, it’s a nightmare! With just a touch of a button on the hub, emCare got hold of my parents who came to our house whilst Sharon could take the youngest to hospital. Absolutely no regrets in deciding to get the service. I am so grateful.”

Alice and Ron, partners for over 10 years, have retired in Malta.

“It has always been Ron’s wish to retire on this beautiful island however, having no family in Malta, makes it quite difficult particular in an emergency. I came across emCare some years ago and had the emCare hub as well as some other add-ones installed at our house soon after. However, never until recently did I really value the service. A couple of weeks ago we were undergoing some home renovations and I had a person in my house who had disguised himself as a water technician. When I realised that he was intentionally rummaging through our belongings, I pressed the panic button. As soon as I pressed the button, he panicked and left and in no time the police were at our house. If that is not peace of mind!”

Marija’s 75-year old father John strives to lead an independent life as much as possible.

“When my mother died a couple of years ago I wanted dad to come and live with us. However, he was so adamant about not leaving his house! I knew emCare’s worth when dad fell and needed assistance. I got a call from emCare stating that dad needed some assistance after a fall. Luckily it was nothing serious. It works for both of us, he continues to enjoy his independent life and I get peace of mind knowing that I can be alerted if anything had to happen.”
